Why Your House’s Indoor Air Quality Matters

by | Mar 25, 2020 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

The worldwide growth of COVID-19 has likely turned your regular routine upside down.

In uncertain times, you can take comfort in knowing your house is your safe space. You’re probably spending more time there now. As a result, your indoor air quality is now more important than ever.

Did you know we can install indoor air quality products in your house that deliver hospital-grade filtration? These products can clear bacteria from your air, as well as allergens, odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Modern houses are tightly airtight, which is great for energy efficiency. But it also means your indoor air could be worse than the air outside. In reality, the EPA says it can be two to five times worse than outdoors. This might lead to issues, since we spend about 90% of our time indoors.

There are many elements that can cause poor indoor air quality, like cleaning products and air fresheners. These might cause headaches and exasperate allergies and asthma.

There are a few actions you can take to enhance your air quality. Some include enhanced air filters, an air purification system or an ultraviolet (UV) germicidal light.

Not sure which option is best for your home? Our expert technicians can perform an indoor air quality audit. Based upon the results, we can then suggest the ideal solution for your home’s distinctive needs.

Air Filtration

When browsing air filters, you should look at the MERV rating, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This assesses how effectively it filters pollutants.

One of the most average and most economical filters, flat fiberglass filters, rank between 1 and 4 on the MERV scale. Pleated filters are somewhat better, graded between 8 and 12.

We recommend upgrading to at minimum a MERV 13, such as the HC13 Media Air Cleaner, for optimal results. This filter provides clearer air while reducing energy consumption*.

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are considered the best in air filtration, as they’re usually installed in hospitals. They’re effective at trapping 99.97–99.99% of indoor pollutants, like pollen, pet dander and smoke.

Air Purification

Lennox® has some of the most advanced air purification equipment you can buy. PureAir™ S and Healthy Climate™ PureAir Air Purification Systems deliver hospital-grade filtration while taking care of all categories of indoor air contaminants.

These powerful systems can wipe out:

  • 99.9% of allergens, like pollen, dust and pet dander
  • 95% of bacteria-sized particles, such as ones that contribute to strep throat
  • 50% of VOCs and odors within 24 hours

UV Germicidal Lights

A UV germicidal light is installed on the inside of your comfort unit. Its strong rays eradicate bacteria and mold within seconds.

If your family suffers from allergies or asthma, this unit could offer relief. Especially if you are in a humid part of the country where bacteria and mold flourish.

This light also has an added advantage for your comfort unit. It may help it last for a greater period of time and operate more efficiently, because it keeps the internal pieces clean.

Our air quality engineers recommend combining one of these lights with an upgraded filter, such as our Carbon Clean 16® Media Air Cleaner, for the best results. This filter provides industry-leading MERV 16 filtration in addition to carbon-coated fibers to remove particles from your home’s air. It does all of this without decreasing your heating and cooling system’s airflow.

Whole-Home Humidifiers

Having correct humidity in your residence might help keep your loved ones in good health during the winter. It can help with sore throats, dry skin and chapped lips, among other cold weather irritations.

If you aren’t aware of what your home’s humidity percentage is, we’ll determine it while we do your indoor air quality audit. While the range changes based on outdoor temperatures, HVAC experts typically suggest keeping it between 40–60 percent.

You can achieve this ideal range by using a whole-home humidifier. This unit usually accompanies your furnace or air handler to give optimum humidity across your residence. Some models, like the Healthy Climate® Whole-Home Power Humidifier, use an included fan to spread humidity when your heating equipment isn’t on.

*Based on in-duct testing that shows Healthy Climate® filters reduce airflow restriction. Greater restriction of airflow creates a greater load on a unit’s fan motor, increasing energy consumption.
