At Air Quality Solutions, we know Ohio summers can be hot, sticky, and unpredictable – especially here in Grove City. That’s why it’s important to make sure your air conditioning system is ready to keep your home cool and your energy bills in check. Whether you have a Lennox system (which we proudly install) or another major HVAC brand, regular maintenance can help your AC run more efficiently, last longer, and avoid mid-season breakdowns.
Here are our top maintenance tips to help you stay ahead of the heat.
- Clean Up Around Your Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor AC condenser unit needs breathing room to work efficiently. Clear away leaves, grass clippings, sticks, and other debris that may have built up over the spring. We recommend trimming plants and shrubs so there’s at least two feet of clearance all around the unit. You can also gently rinse off the condenser coils with a garden hose (from the top down) to remove dirt and grime. Avoid using high-pressure washers, which can damage the fins.
- Don’t Cover Your AC Unit in the Summer
While it’s common to use a cover during the off-season to protect the unit from snow and ice, your AC should never be covered while it’s in use during the summer. A cover restricts airflow, causes overheating, and can lead to serious damage. Just keep the area around it clean and unobstructed.
- Change Your Air Filters Regularly
A clogged or dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing your AC system to work harder than it should. This not only increases your energy bills but can also shorten the lifespan of your system. Aim to check your air filter every 30 days and replace it at least every 1–3 months, depending on usage and whether you have pets or allergies.
- Listen and Look for Warning Signs
If your AC doesn’t seem to be cooling your home like it used to, or if your energy bills are suddenly higher than normal, your system may not be running efficiently. Keep an eye out for:
- Unusual noises like banging, buzzing, or rattling
- Weak airflow coming from your vents
- Warm air blowing when the AC is on
- Short cycling (the unit turns on and off frequently)
- Water leaks or ice forming on the unit
If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to schedule a professional service call.
- Check Your Thermostat Settings
Make sure your thermostat is set to “cool” and that the temperature is appropriate for the season. While comfort and efficiency can vary by household, most HVAC professionals recommend setting your thermostat to 78 degrees when you’re home. For better comfort while sleeping, consider lowering it a couple of degrees – just enough to stay cool without significantly increasing energy use. If you haven’t already, upgrading to a smart thermostat can help improve energy efficiency and give you greater control over your indoor climate.
- Schedule a Seasonal AC Tune-Up
Even the best systems need a little TLC. Regular tune-ups can help prevent major issues and keep your system performing at its best all summer long. During a professional AC maintenance visit, our licensed technicians will:
- Clean and inspect the condenser coils
- Check refrigerant levels
- Inspect electrical components
- Test system operation and thermostat calibration
- Ensure your Lennox or other brand system is running at peak efficiency
